The 1st section
From Erlangen to Munich
We have divided the first 200 kilometres of the tour into 4 stages. We will start in Erlangen and ride from there via Hilpoltstein, Ingolstadt and Allershausen to Munich.

The 4 stages of the 1st section
Stage 1
Erlangen – Hilpoltstein
Stage 2
Hilpoltstein – Ingolstadt
From Hilpoltstein, the second stage takes us to Ingolstadt. Here we follow the Gredl cycle path, which leads from Hilpoltstein via Heideck and Thalmässing to Greding. The entire route between Hilpoltstein and Greding is a good 30 kilometres long and runs without major differences in altitude past various catering establishments and points of interest in the southern district of Roth.
The last section of the Gredl cycle path follows the Schwarzach river to Greding. The Schwarzach is also our companion for the next few kilometres. At Kipfenberg we leave the riverbank, ride past Kipfenberg Castle to the geographical centre of Bavaria and then follow the path via Denkendorf and Stammham to Ingolstadt, a large city on the Danube in Upper Bavaria with 138,200 inhabitants. Here we want to stop in the old town and spend the night in the Altstadthotel "Die Galerie".
Stage 3
Ingolstadt – Kranzberg
From Ingolstadt, the route continues south towards Munich. First, the tour begins in Ingolstadt and leads along a separate cycle path to Baar-Ebenhausen, where the route changes into a sequence of lightly used country roads. The area is rural, hop gardens and modern farms dominate the picture.
Stage 4
Kranzberg – München
On the last stage of Section 1, we follow the Ammer-Amper Cycle Path for a while, a long-distance cycle path through the picture-book scenery of the Bavarian Alpine foothills, which begins at the Ammer springs in the Graswangtal valley.
We leave the banks of the Amper, or rather the Amper Canal, at Großnöbach and follow the broad, asphalted cycle path along federal road 13 to Unterschleißheim. From there we cycle along Ingolstädter Landstraße, which becomes Leopoldstraße, into the heart of Munich.
The 2nd section
From Munich to Nauders
In the second part of the journey, we continue in 5 sections along Lake Starnberg over the Fernpass in the Alps to Nauders. On this section we follow the Via Claudia Augusta, which has connected northern and southern Europe for thousands of years.

The 5 stages of the 2nd section
Stage 5
Munich – Seeshaupt
We leave Munich in a south-westerly direction and follow the course of the A 95 to Lake Starnberg. Until 1962, Lake Starnberg was still called Würmsee and was then renamed after the town at its northern tip. Lake Starnberg is the fifth-largest lake in Germany, and due to its water depth even the second-wateriest.
Starnberg is a district town in Upper Bavaria with about 23,000 inhabitants. The town is located at the northern end of Lake Starnberg and is about 25 km from Munich. From there we cycle along the shore of the lake to Seeshaupt, a community with about 3,200 inhabitants in the district of Weilheim-Schongau, the stage destination.
Stage 6
Seeshaupt – Garmisch-Partenkirchen
From Seeshaupt we continue towards the Alps. The cycle path between Habach and the Riegsee lake brings us onto the Bodensee-Königsee cycle path, which serves as a feeder to the Loisach cycle path. This cycle path will accompany us to the Fernpass, where the Loisach rises in a moorland area in the province of Tyrol between the Lechtal Alps in the west and the Mieminger Mountains in the east below or north of the Fernpass. Majestic Alpine scenery, moors, lakes, rare flora - the well-signposted Loisach cycle path offers all this and much more.
With its location amidst breathtaking mountain scenery at the foot of the 2,962-metre-high Zugspitze, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the epitome of vast and pristine alpine nature. An unmistakable place against an awe-inspiring backdrop and our stage destination after 50 km.
Stage 7
Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Nassereith
From Garmisch we continue through the mountain world of the Alps. Near Ehrwald we come across the Via Claudia Augusta. From Germany, this great route on the tracks of the historic trade route starts in Donauwörth and heads south from there. Via Augsburg, Landsberg/Lech, the cycle path reaches Füssen. It then continues through the mountains via Reutte in Tyrol to the Fernpass.
Further on, the trail reaches Imst and leads through the Inn Valley to Prutz and Punsch. From there it continues to Nauders, where the highest point of the tour is crossed on the Reschenpass. The destination of the 7th stage is the Fernsteinsee lake near Nassereith, which is reached after 38 km.
Stage 8
Nassereith – Landeck
Above Nassereith, the Via Claudia Augusta presents itself with one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in Tyrol. The route begins as the Gurgltal Cycle Path - a very scenic section of the Via Claudia Augusta - from Nassereith via the eastern edge of Tarrenz and the Gurgltal fields to Imst.
Here you finally reach the Inn valley and - following the course of the Inn upstream - Landeck, an idyllic small town with flair, known as an Alpine town and the westernmost small town in Tyrol.
Stage 9
Landeck – Nauders
On the 9th stage, our route from Landeck follows the steep, wildly romantic Inn Valley uphill and occasionally uses the original routing of the former Roman trade route. The cycle path is still signposted with the "Via Claudia sign", but mostly follows a route designated as a "cycle trail".
From Prutz, the road flattens out again and the cycle path leads along an asphalt side road through the narrow Inn valley to Pfunds. Now begins the inevitable climb to the Reschen Pass over 11 hairpin bends. After the first pass at Naudersmühlen, the route goes downhill again to Nauders.
The 3rd section
From Nauders to Bardolino
The third stage of the journey takes us from Nauders over the Rechenpass through Vinschgau and past Merano and Bolzano down to Lake Garda. After 277 kilometres, the destination of this stretch is Bardolino.

The 6 stages of the 3rd section
Stage 10
Nauders - Kastelbell
From Nauders, which lies at 1,394 metres, there is another significant ascent of around 400 metres in altitude to the Reschen Pass. In the southwest of the municipal area, the borders of Austria, Switzerland and Italy meet at the Dreiländergrenzstein (border stone) at an altitude of 2,179 metres.
From here we follow the Vinschgau cycle path, as part of the Via Claudia Augusta cycle route along the Etsch river. Past the Reschensee lake, we go through St. Valentin to Burgeis, Schleis and finally to Glurns. From here the cycle path continues to the Prader Sand. This is the alluvial landscape at the tributary of the Suldenbach stream.
The next section leads through a wild section on the banks of the Adige. The river has carved a deep furrow, the gorge is part of the Stilfser Joch National Park. Via Göflan you reach Schlanders, the main town of the valley. The cycle path now continues through the orchards via Morter at the entrance to the Martell Valley to Latsch. After passing through the town, the route descends through the Latschanderschlucht gorge to Kastelbell, our stage destination.
Stage 11
Kastelbell - Merano
From Kastelbell, the trail leads us through Staben, Naturns, Plaus, Rabland and Plars - the next towns on the cycle path, until it finally leads via Algund to Merano, the end point of the Vinschgau tour, but not the end of the cycle path, which leads to Bolzano as the Etschtal cycle path.
Stage 12
Merano - Bolzano
The cycle path from Merano to Bolzano has almost no inclines at all; the difference in altitude over the entire length of the route is a mere 75 metres. Once you have left the spa town of Merano behind you, the cycle path to Bolzano begins south of Sinich. Between the seemingly endless apple orchards on one side and the Adige River winding through the valley on the other, you move steadily towards the provincial capital of Bolzano.
You can enjoy cycling on a flat, asphalt road. A constant companion on the cycle route is the train. Since the cycle path runs directly next to the railway track and also reaches every station, a leisurely tour along the cycle path is even easier and more relaxed to plan.
Stage 13
Bolzano - Trento
Starting in Bolzano, we head south along the Eisack river. Here, too, the cycle path we want to follow is part of the Via Claudia Augusta and the Etschradweg. As you continue, you cross the Adige River and then follow the cycle path southwards along the eastern bank of the Adige River. Shortly before Neumarkt, the cycle path approaches the Brenner state road and a motorway junction - then it continues along the river bank through the orchards, past Laag and Salurn.
Here you reach the South Tyrolean border and with it a language border: the villages of Rovere della Luna, San Michele and Mezzocorona south of Salurn are already Italian. Past Lavis, where the cycle path forces a few turns at the mouth of the Avisio into the Adige, the route continues southwards, where the towers of the city of Trento can already be seen.
Stage 14
Trento - Riva del Garda
From Trento we go uphill until we reach the cycle path "Valle dei Laghi" near Terlago. Following this cycle path, after a few small climbs, we reach the village of Vezzano. The route continues to the village of Sarche, where there is a section where the cycle path has not yet been upgraded and the route leads along the sometimes busy western Gardesana road or along side roads.
In Sarce, we continue south on the cycle path that has been rebuilt there until we reach Arco. After Arco we leave the Sarca river and cycle to Riva del Garda, which lies directly on Lake Garda.
Stage 15
Riva del Garda - Bardolino
We cycle along the western shore of Lake Garda to Limone, from where we take the ferry to Malcesine and cycle the rest of the way along the beautiful eastern shore to Bardolino. The "Garda by Bike" project, a complete circular cycle route around Lake Garda, has been in planning for a long time. In the summer of 2018, the most spectacular section was opened in Limone sul Garda, an almost 2 km long bike and foot path that partly floats freely above the lake, which we of course also want to take a look at and use.
After its final completion, the cycle path will be an important piece of the puzzle to make the entire circumnavigation of the lake possible. Another building block will be the path connecting the northern shore of Trentino via Torbole-Tempesta with Malcesine in the Veneto. The Lake Garda Cycle Path will be connected to the Ciclovia del Sole and the Ciclovia Vento and in the coming years will form a network of paths for cyclists that will be over a thousand kilometres long.
The 4th section
From Bardolino to Caorle
The following 231 kilometres will take us in 4 stages from Bardolino through the Pianura Padana to the sea. On the way, we will visit Venice by ferry and end our journey section number four in Caorle.

The 4 stages of the 4th section
Stage 16
Bardolino - San Bonifacio
This stage leads from Bardolino along the panoramic road towards Calmasino, which is reached via a first, not particularly difficult climb. From here you can enjoy a beautiful view of the lower part of the lake. This takes you into the heart of the area where the Bardolino doc wine is produced, and cycling through numerous vineyards, you approach Calmasino. The beautiful country roads soon take you to Piovezzano and further on, downhill, the cycle path of the Biffis Canal.
From here you can enjoy the beautiful view of the lower lying Adige river. The completely flat cycle path leads to Bussolengo. After crossing the old town centre, the cycle path continues to the village of Chievo, where you cross the weir bridge of Chievo and continue on the cycle path of the Camuzzoni Canal, which leads directly to the centre of Verona. After Verona, the Adige river accompanies us again for a short stretch. Until San Bonifacio, we follow the BI12 - Ciclovia Pedemontana Alpina cycle path.
Stage 17
San Bonifacio - San Pietro
From San Bonifacio we continue in a westerly direction. Our way leads us through Lonigo, situated on the Guà, past Agugliaro, a municipality with 1392 inhabitants in the upper Italian province of Vicenza. It is located in the Basso Vicentino, near the border with the province of Padua, between the Colli Berici and the Colli Euganei, which belong to Vicenza and Padua respectively. In a northerly arc, we skirt the Colli Euganei Park to reach Padua.
After the centre of Padua, we follow the Canale Piovego to spend the night in San Pietro.
Stage 18
San Pietro - Punta Sabbioni
From San Pietro we follow the Naviglio del Brenta to Oriago through the area of the Riviera del Brenta. From there we continue along the Scolo Lusore to Marghera, a part of the city of Venice located on the mainland. Marghera and neighbouring Mestre are known as the "ugly sisters" of Venice because of their industrial character.
Here we meet the Ciclabile per Venezia - this cycle route, makes it possible to reach Venice or the Lido almost entirely on a dedicated cycle route. This route starts in front of the Antares Pavilion of the Vega at the subway to Porto Marghera station and ends at the other end of the Ponte della Libertà at the junction for Tronchetto, from where we want to take the ferry to get to Punta Sabbioni.
Stage 19
Punta Sabbioni - Caorle
This stage follows the coast of the Gulf of Venice at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea. Via the EuroVelo EV8 and the Adriatic Coastal Cycle Route BI 6, we cycle along the sea to Caorle. The route takes us past Lido di Jesolo and through Jesolo, a town with 26,529 inhabitants, about 16 kilometres northeast of Venice. Jesolo has 5.6 million tourists per year and is ranked 8th among tourist destinations in Italy.
We continue along the Cavetta Canal to Cortellazzo. The last kilometres we cycle again directly along the sea past Porto Santa Margherita to Caorle, a town in the metropolitan city of Venice with 11,476 inhabitants and an area of 151 km². With this area, Caorle is one of the largest municipalities in northern Italy in terms of surface area. It lies at the mouth of the Livenza into the Adriatic Sea. Caorle is often called "Little Venice".
The 5th section
From Caorle to Villach
From here, we head north again. The fifth leg of the journey takes us from the northern Italian Adriatic back into the Alps across the border into Austria to Lake Faaker See near Villach.

The 4 stages of the 5th section
Stage 20
Caorle - Spilimbergo
The 20th stage takes us north. For the most part, the route follows the course of the Tagliamento, the "king of Alpine rivers", which meanders unobtrusively and broadly through the archaic landscape of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The river is the only one in the entire Alpine region and one of the few in Europe that has a completely natural course.
The route climbs slowly and steadily to Spilimbergo, a small town in the province of Pordenone, named after the Carinthian Count Spengenberg, who settled here in the 11th century. In the Middle Ages, the town became an important centre of traffic and trade, and its prosperity led to a rapid increase in the number of inhabitants - among them numerous families from Lombardy and Tuscany, as well as Jews - so that three more ring walls were needed to protect everyone.
Stage 21
Spilimbergo - Venzone
For the next 40 kilometres, we cycle along the Tagliamento and continue along the Tagliamento cycle path FVG-6, which takes us through Valeriano and Pinzano al Tagliamento - the municipality of Pinzano al Tagliamento is located in north-eastern Italy in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It is east of Pordenone and has 1514 inhabitants - past the Riserva Naturale Regionale del Lago di Cornino to Venzone.
Since the time of the Celts (500 BC), Venzone has owed its good fortune to its special position as an unavoidable transit point towards the north. Later, the Romans built one of their statios (viewpoints) there along the Julia Augusta road, which led from Aquileia to Norikum (today's central Austria).
Stage 22
Venzone - Malboghetto Valbruna
Behind Venzone we leave the banks of the Tagliamento and follow the Fella, which is a river in north-eastern Friuli, Upper Italy, and flows through the Val Canale from Camporosso near Tarvis to Pontebba and the Canal del Ferro as a southern continuation of the Canal Valley to Carnia, where it flows into the Tagliamento as a delta. Our route is now the Alpe Adria cycle path.
Our stage destination, Maborghetto Valbruna, is a small village between the Carnic and Julian Alps. In the past it belonged to Austria, but since 1919 it has been on Italian territory.
Stage 23
Malboghetto Valbruna – Villach
The 6th section
From Villach to Mürzzuschlag
The sixth leg of the journey takes us 243 kilometres through Styria over the Semmering, which forms the natural border between Lower Austria and Styria, to Mürzzuschlag.
