2466 Kilometer mit dem E-Bike
The total distance of our adventure is 2466 km and includes 152 hours of pure driving time (at an average speed of 16 Km/h). That is ambitious - but doable! We have divided this route into 10 travel sections with 46 stages
We are currently looking into the possibilities of a bicycle tour. What could be more obvious than simply starting from home and heading south? After many hours of research on the internet on various platforms, forums and cycling apps, the idea of a two to three-month round trip is taking shape.
There is the "Via Claudia Augusta Cycle Route" - this seems to be a route that is realistically feasible. It would be a good place to start, to cover the first 700 km. Ok, that's not yet two thousand kilometres on an e-bike, but it's a first part of the journey.
Trail types on our route
- Singletrail: 44,9 km
- Weg: 172 km
- Fahrradweg: 945 km
- Nebenstraße: 217 km
- Straße: 498 km
- Bundesstraße: 80,6 km
- Fähre: 650 m
This route leads from Donauwörth over the Fernpass and Reschenpass to the Po Valley or Venice and will accompany us again and again on the first three sections of the journey. We could therefore use the infrastructure up to Verona to start in Erlangen and join the Via Claudia Augusta via Munich, cross the Alps and ride to Lake Garda.
The following 231 kilometres will take us in 4 stages from Bardolino through the Pianura Padana to the sea. On the way, we will visit Venice by ferry and end our journey section number four after 4 stages in Caorle.
From here, we head north again. The fifth leg of the journey takes us from the northern Italian Adriatic back into the Alps across the border into Austria to Lake Faaker See near Villach.
The sixth leg of the journey takes us 243 kilometres through Styria over the Semmering, which forms the natural border between Lower Austria and Styria, to Mürzzuschlag.
The route continues via Bad Erlach and Rust, in a detour past Lake Neusiedl to beautiful Vienna. The seventh section of the journey covers 188 kilometres.
For the next few kilometres we cycle along the Danube to Enns. From here we follow the Roman Cycle Path, a 242 km long cycle path that connects Enns with Passau, to Wels.
In theory, that sounds really good. We have the great new e-bikes and can now take our time to think about what else we need. We already agree that we need a trailer or panniers. Maybe a cargo trailer would be best? Once you have started to deal with these topics, it quickly becomes clear that this is a science in itself. So there is still a lot to clarify, research and prepare.
The Via Claudia Augusta is a road that has connected northern and southern Europe for thousands of years - before the Romans, during the Roman Empire, in the Middle Ages and in modern times - until today. It is a 700 km long long-distance cycle route that leads from Donauwörth in Bavaria across the Alps to Ostiglia on the Po in Italy or, alternatively, to Quarto d'Altino near Venice on the Adriatic Sea. At the same time, the trail makes it possible to cross the Alps by bicycle.
Close to the German border (the Zugspitze is less than 14 kilometres away), the B179 leads over the Fernpass. It is located between the Lechtal Alps in the west and the Mieminger Mountains in the east. The route is said to have been popular with traders even in pre-Roman times.
The Reschen Pass is one of the most important north-south connections across the Alps. As a border pass, it connects the Austrian Upper Inn Valley with the Italian Vinschgau Valley. The actual pass road begins on the Austrian side shortly after Pfunds at the Kajetans bridge.
The Danube Cycle Route is a long-distance cycle route that covers a distance of about 2850 km from the source of the Danube to its mouth in the Black Sea.
Super gemacht, tolle Website!
